(Edinburgh & London, 1977), 2: 182, 125, 88, 59, 39, 25, 15, 9, 6, 4, 3, 2, 1, supplies the entire line of descent from Nicholas Ashe and Joanna Pollard to H.M. Queen Elizabeth II. John Ashe, of Westcombe & Batcombe, clothier, was probably the one of this name who had a daughter Alice bapt. 22 Dec. 1605 at Batcombe (IGI). Some of the Ashe family of Batcombe were known as “Ashe alias Mercer,” doubtless after their occupation as clothiers. Paget’s account has been confirmed and elaborated upon using the following sources:

  • Polly Holmes à Court, Holmes à Court, available online at http://holmesacourt.org/ (provides extensive documentation on the generations of James Ashe of Freshford and particularly of his son Edward Ashe of Heytesbury).
